AADR/Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Hatton Awards Competition

The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) is entitled to send qualified individuals to compete in the 2010 IADR/Unilever Hatton Competition and Awards. These individuals will be selected on the basis of a poster competition to be held at the 39th Annual Meeting of the AADR in Washington, DC, on March 2, 2010.
The competition is designed for junior investigators (junior, senior and post-doctoral) who exhibit potential for a productive career in dental research. Mentors are strongly urged to support and select a project for the competition that is original, well-planned, and carefully executed.
Eligibility:
Entrants must be U.S. citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States (or who have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of submission of the abstract—those with a “green card”) or persons of other nationalities whose research is performed in the United States.
Candidates MUST be AADR members.
The research may not have been published (even as an abstract) or presented at any national or international meeting (excluding state, regional, or institutional meetings) prior to submission.
Persons participating in the IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Awards, or in the DENTSPLY/Caulk Student Research Group (SRG) Award Competition are NOT eligible to compete in the Hatton Awards Competition.
In addition, persons participating in the competition cannot have won previously in the same category.
Please note that all entries will be presented in poster format.
Categories:
There are three categories of eligibility:
Junior: This competition will be limited to those candidates who have carried out their research as part of undergraduate/professional training (research undertaken as an undergraduate science student, as a dental student, or during the first two years of pursuing an intercalated science degree while in training as a dental student). Individuals with a formal research degree (Master’s and/or Ph.D.) are not eligible for this category.
Senior: Entrants for this category would have carried out research as part of a higher degree, including a Masters, Ph.D., or M.D. with previous laboratory experience, or as part of specialty training. Dental students pursuing an intercalated science degree whose research was carried out more than two years after entering the combined degree program should apply for the senior category. Post-D.D.S. or Post-D.M.D. students without a Ph.D. should also apply for this category.
How to Enter:
1. Submit an abstract for the AADR Annual Meeting via the normal online process by the October 2, 2009, deadline date. On the abstract form and poster presentation, the entrant must be listed first, as primary author and presenter of the abstract entered for the competition. Co-authors, if any, should also be listed on both the abstract and the poster.
2. In the awards section of the on-line abstract submission process select AADR/Johnson & Johnson Oral Health Products Hatton Awards Competition. You will be prompted to answer eligibility requirement questions. The system will then inform you if you are eligible to participate and place your name in the competition.
Procedures:
The AADR/Johnson & Johnson Oral Health Products Hatton Awards Competition Committee will select the best 27 abstracts of those who applied for the Competition and notify these individuals. All other abstracts will be subject to the AADR’s normal review process and, if accepted, will be placed in the appropriate session for the annual meeting.
The 27 competitors selected will submit an extended abstract —up to but not exceeding the 6 page limit by January 15, 2010, which will be reviewed by the AADR Hatton Awards Committee and which will be judged as part of the competition. This is intended to provide greater depth and perspective for the study than may be possible in an abstract. The extended abstracts are to be submitted online.
The extended abstract should be organized under the following headings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, References, and Figures/Tables (if necessary). The initial abstracts and extended abstracts are blind reviewed by the Committee, so include ONLY the title and abstract ID number at the top preceding the Introduction. References should be listed alphabetically. References and their citations should follow the style of the Journal of Dental Research.
Please note that references, footnotes, and diagrams are included in the 6 page limit. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the return of the extended abstract to the competitor.
The deadline for extended abstracts is January 15, 2010.
Judging Criteria:
The AADR Hatton Awards Committee will judge the entries as follows:
20% for extended abstract;
40% on verbal presentation of poster
(up to 10 minutes);
40% for question-and-answer period
(not to exceed 5 minutes).
The AADR will select the six most outstanding presentations (2 in each category). The six AADR Hatton winners will be announced at the Opening Ceremonies, the evening of March 3, 2010, Washington, DC. These winners will be notified after the meeting regarding details for the IADR/Unilever Hatton Competition and Awards.
Awards:
In addition, the six winners will receive cash prizes and plaques in each category:
(3) $1000 first place winners (one in each category)
(3) $500 second place winners (one in each category)
The prizes are sponsored by a generous donation from Johnson & Johnson Oral Health Products Division. Specific details regarding poster presentation will be provided prior to the meeting.
The IADR Competition:
Qualified AADR Hatton winners will compete with the other IADR Divisional winners in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Competition and Awards at the 88th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR in Barcelona, Spain on July 13, 2010.
