AUSTRALIA – PhD SCHOLARSHIP 201 – AV
Arthritis Victoria PhD scholarship 2010 in Australia
About AV:
In the 1960s when rheumatologist Dr Leslie Koadlow reflected on what support people with arthritis needed to manage their condition, he acknowledged that people other than doctors had an important contribution to make in this process. He saw the need for an organisation to support people with arthritis to live better with their condition between appointments with their medical practitioners. At the heart of this was the idea that people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions could help each other. Self help groups were therefore crucial to the development of Arthritis Victoria, and the first service the organisation provided. Self help remains at the heart of the way in which Arthritis Victoria provides services.
Detail:
The purpose of the scholarships is to provide opportunities for graduates to pursue full-time PhD studies in musculoskeletal research in Victorian Universities. The overall goal is to foster high quality careers in musculoskeletal research in Victoria.
Eligibility:
The scholarship is for undertaking PhD studies full-time. You must be able to show that you have secured arrangements to undertake a full-time PhD in research at a Victorian University. The research must relate to musculoskeletal conditions. The scholarship holder must not engage in other paid activity that materially diminishes their capacity to conduct the research full-time, other than as allowable through standard university guidelines for full time PhD candidates. To be eligible for a PhD Top Up Scholarship, applicants must have already been awarded a three year competitive postgraduate scholarship such as an Australian Postgraduate Award. Arthritis Victoria will consider applications for part-time scholarships where the scholarship holder is unable to undertake a full-time scholarship due to caring responsibilities and/or health needs. If a scholarship is taken part-time this will be inline with standard university guidelines for part time PhD scholarship candidature (part time scholarships are not tax exempt), and will be paid at 50% of the full time scholarship rate.
Award:
An awardee of a scholarship who does not accept an Offer of Award by the specified date will forfeit the award. Scholars must also advise Arthritis Victoria of the expected commencement date of the scholarship. A scholarship will be awarded for three years subject to satisfactory annual progress as judged by the Host institution and by Arthritis Victoria. Scholarships are available for a maximum period of three years full-time from initial enrolment for the PhD degree. The scholarship will cease upon submission of the thesis for a PhD.
Closing date for applications: 11th October 2010, by 5pm.
Please note that late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
