Luce scholarships – university of north carolina

The Luce Scholars Program each year offers a select group of fifteen young Americans an experience in Asia designed both to broaden their professional perspectives and to sharpen their perceptions of Asia, of America, and of themselves. The program is funded by the Henry Luce Foundation and administered in Asia in cooperation with The Asia Foundation.

Launched in 1974, the Luce Scholars Program is aimed at a highly qualified group of young Americans in a variety of professional fields. It is unique among American-Asian exchanges in that it is intended for young leaders who have had no prior experience of Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia or their Asian counterparts and contemporaries.

In spite of its name, the Luce Scholars Program is experiential rather than academic in nature. At the heart of the enterprise is the internship that is arranged for each Scholar on the basis of his or her specific interest, background, qualifications, and experience. These work assignments run for approximately ten months-from September until July of the following year-and are intended primarily as learning opportunities for the Scholars.
Eligibility

In order to be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

Have U.S. citizenship.

Be no more than twenty-nine years of age on September 1, 2008.

Have at least a bachelor’s degree by the time the program starts.

Be enrolled at or a graduate of UNC-CH.

Have had neither significant exposure to Asia nor a specific career interest in Asian affairs.

Have a strong academic record (minimum 3.5 GPA).

Have demonstrated a strong motivation and potential for accomplishment within their chosen field.

Have given evidence of outstanding capacity for leadership.

Application Information
For more information about the Luce Scholarship, please contact Raymond Farrow ( 919-843-7553, raymond_farrow@unc.edu This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or the Office of Distinguised Scholarships This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Farrow, a former Luce Scholar, is chair of the UNC Luce Scholars Nominating Committee, and potential applicants are strongly urged to talk with him before submitting an application. The application is online, and requires a special address for accessing which Mr. Farrow can provide. Students may also view general information about the scholarship at the Henry Luce Foundation web site (www.hluce.org).

We encourage candidates living abroad to click here for teleconferencing instructions. Also please contact Trent Johnson a minimum of one months in advance if you plan to interview while abroad.

Application

The application submitted to the UNC nominating committee will include one original of the following:

A biographic form.

Official transcripts of all college and graduate work. You may request internal transcripts from the Registrar at no cost to be sent to our office in 225 Graham Memorial. Please make this request at least five days prior to the deadline.

Four letters of recommendation. The Office of Distinguished Scholarships suggests applicants provide this letter, or a version of it, to all those whom you ask to write recommendations.

A personal statement of no more than 1,000 words which outlines the development of the candidate’s main academic and extra-curricular interests; the development of an applicant’s long-range career interests; plans for pursuing them in the future; and reasons for applying to the Luce Program.

Deadlines
Please note that although students may fill out an application online, it must be submitted in hard copy to the Office of Distinguished Scholarships in 225 Graham Memorial by noon, September 21, 2009.

Students selected to interview for the Luce Scholarship will be notified by September 28. Interviews will be held on Friday, October 2.

The nominating committee will review applications and invite selected students for campus interviews . (Students not physically present at UNC, but in the continental United States, must be present for the designated on-campus interview for the scholarship to which they are applying and for which a UNC endorsement is required.)

International cancer technology transfer fellowships

The fellowships are funded by a group of cancer institutes, leagues, societies, associations, foundations, and governmental agencies in North America, Europe, and Australia. The aims of the awards are threefold: to facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology; to allow exchange knowledge and enhance skills in basic, clinical, behavioural, and epidemiological areas of cancer research; and in cancer control and prevention to allow acquisition of up-to-date clinical management, diagnostic, and therapeutic expertise.

Topics for research training are the following:

Cancer control and prevention (including tobacco control)

Basic, applied and clinical cancer research

Epidemiology, cancer registration, public education and behavioural sciences

Topics for clinical training are the following:

Surgery, radio- and chemotherapy, medical oncology, multidisciplinary cancer care

Clinical trials

Detection and diagnosis

The fellowships permit successful candidates to spend time at a suitable host institute abroad. They are particularly aimed at investigators and clinicians working in places where such teaching is not yet available and where the necessary facilities exist to apply and disseminate the new skills upon return.

Requirements

Fellowships are open to appropriately qualified investigators, pathologists, epidemiologists, cancer registrars, behavioural scientists, tobacco control activists, laboratory technicians, clinicians, and general practicioners, generally in the early stages of their careers; and clinicians who are established in oncology practice.

Experts from any country, who have been invited to teach these specialised skills at institutes abroad, are also eligible to apply (reverse flow ICRETTs).

Candidates who are already physically present at the proposed host institute whilst their applications are under consideration are not eligible for a UICC fellowship.

About 120–150 awards are available per year with an average award value for one-month stipend and travel of US$3,400. The maximum length is three months. Successful candidates usually receive UICC stipend support for up to one month only, while home or host institutes are expected to cover living costs for any additional periods. UICC also contributes to the least expensive international two-way (return) air fare or other appropriate form of transport.

Travel awards do not include costs for internal travel within the home or host countries. These and extra costs for visa, passports, airport taxes, etc. are the responsibility of the fellow. No financial support is provided for dependents

Deadline

Application closing date None. Applications are accepted at any time.
