<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>About CIB:</strong><br />
The C·I·B is an inter-institutional Centre of Excellence established within the DST-NRF Centres of Excellence Programme. This means that the C·I·B is not just at one institution, but has affiliated researchers at a range of academic and non-academic institutes throughout South Africa. This inter-institutional arrangement allows a much broader range of research interactions to take place, allowing a wide diversity of research associates and students to benefit from the programme.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Detail:</strong><br />
As part of SANBI’s Early Detection and Rapid Response Programme (funded through the Working for Water Programme of the Department of Water Affairs), several bursaries are available to conduct research on various aspects of managing new invasions. A range of projects are available including topics on molecular phylogenetics, GIS mapping, taxonomy, population modelling, social science, history, mathematical ecology, and evolutionary biology. Submitted topics in line with EDRR’s goals will also be considered.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><span id="more-5576"></span>Requirements:</strong><br />
Candidates must be pro-active, enthusiastic, and interested in doing excellent research that can make a difference.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Bursary Values:</strong> (to cover living expenses and university fees)<br />
Honours/4th year undergraduate R 25 000 p.a. for 1 year<br />
• Masters R 60 000 p.a. for 2 years<br />
• Doctoral R 80 000 p.a. for 3 years<br />
• Post-doctoral R150,000 p.a. for 2 years<br />
Project running expenses will be covered separately and will vary depending on the project.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Application process:<br />
</strong>Student bursaries are open to all South African citizens, and post-doctoral research bursaries are open to anyone who has completed their PhD in the last five years.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>About Association:<br />
</strong>The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. bears the name of the renowned author Horatio Alger, Jr., whose tales of overcoming adversity through unyielding perseverance and basic moral principles captivated the public in the late 19th century. The Association, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit educational organization, was established in 1947 to dispel the mounting belief among the nation&#8217;s youth that the American Dream was no longer attainable.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Detail:</strong><br />
The Horatio Alger Michigan Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the State of Michigan who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><span id="more-5403"></span>Eligibility:</strong> To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Michigan Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:<br />
1. be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Michigan, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;<br />
2. have a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor&#8217;s degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution);<br />
3. critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; if higher, an explanation must be provided);<br />
4. involvement in co-curricular and community activities;<br />
5. demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0);<br />
6. be a resident of Michigan; and<br />
7. be a citizen of the United States</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Required Forms:<br />
</strong>1. Applicants must have one letter of Letter of Support. They must be logged in to the application process to complete this. Faxes/emails will not be accepted.<br />
2. All applicants must submit an official High School transcript with legend that includes senior year classes. Faxes/emails will not be accepted.<br />
3. Applicants must complete and mail the certifications form after downloading it from the website. They must be logged in to the application process to download the form. The form must be signed by the parent/guardian and the applicant&#8217;s principal or vice principal prior to mailing. Faxes/emails will not be accepted.<br />
4. A copy of the applicant&#8217;s parent/guardians federal tax return<br />
5. The applicant must provide a copy of the front page of their parent/guardian&#8217;s 2009 individual federal tax return (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ or 1099 SSA-Social Security Tax Form). If their parent/guardian&#8217;s Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is a negative number, please submit copies of their parent/guardian&#8217;s federal individual tax return for the years of 2006, 2007, and 2008. If their parent/guardians were not required to file a tax return, include statement copies showing the amount of any government benefits, such as food stamps or Public Assistance documents. If Benefit Statements are sent in, they must include the benefit amount for the month or year. Faxes/emails will not be accepted.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>About the ASSA:<br />
</strong>The Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA), formed in 1922, is a body consisting of both amateur and professional astronomers. Membership is open to any interested person, regardless of knowledge or experience in astronomy.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Detail:</strong><br />
The South African Astronomical Observatory &#8211; Astronomical Society of South Africa Scholarships for 2011 are announced. The purpose of the SAAO &#8211; ASSA Scholarship is to encourage current or intending undergraduates<br />
(i.e. 1st, 2nd or 3rd year) studying for a B.Sc. degree at any university in South Africa, who have a stated interest in astronomy, to prepare for furthering their interest. Applicants must be resident in South Africa.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><span id="more-5381"></span>There is no standard application form, and the following items must be submitted:</strong><br />
• A covering letter by the applicant, including CV, and a statement of interest in Astronomy, giving reasons.<br />
• A statement of the applicant’s intended course of study (full details of subjects and modules, and their costs) for 2011, and if possible and relevant, for the remaining years of undergraduate study.<br />
• A statement or proof that the applicant is resident in South Africa.<br />
• A statement that the applicant either has no other bursary or scholarship, or where the applicant has a scholarship or bursary, the amount, source and conditions.<br />
• A copy of the applicant’s final official results, whether matric or university, from the previous year of study (this will be 2010, unless there are unusual circumstances).<br />
• A recent letter of support from a lecturer or teacher.<br />
• Full contact details, including e-mail, postal address, cellphone and landline numbers.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Value:</strong><br />
The value of each SAAO &#8211; ASSA Scholarship for 2011 is five thousand rand. One quarter of this amount will be paid be to the Scholarship holder to assist with expenses and prescribed book purchases, and the rest will be paid into the holder’s university fees account. The holder will automatically be considered for the SAAO &#8211; ASSA Scholarship in future years, until completion of the B.Sc. degree, subject to good progress being made.

</strong>The Horatio Alger Oklahoma Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the State of Oklahoma who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><span id="more-5345"></span>Eligibility:</strong> To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Oklahoma Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:<br />
1. be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Oklahoma, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;<br />
2. have a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor&#8217;s degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution);<br />
3. critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; if higher, an explanation must be provided);<br />
4. involvement in co-curricular and community activities;<br />
5. demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0);<br />
6. be a resident of Oklahoma; and<br />
7. be a citizen of the United States</p>

If their parent/guardians were not required to file a tax return, include statement copies showing the amount of any government benefits, such as food stamps or Public Assistance documents. The African Union, in partnership with member states, is offering scholarships in leading African Universities and Higher Education Institutions for the 2010 academic school year in the following fields: water sciences, energy sciences, climate change and education planning.<br />
Scholarships are restricted to post-graduate studies (Masters or Ph.D.) in Africa. The aim is to create an Africa led by its own people with a proud African identity. It is also intended to give a unique opportunity to Africans to strengthen their skills and expose them to best practices and training in Africa.</p>

As part of the recruitment and retention strategy and initiative to address critical and scarce skills in the sector, the National Department of Social Development is hereby making a scholarship available in the field of Social Work.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><span id="more-5176"></span>Eligibility:</strong><br />
Applications are open to current Social Work students as well as prospective students who would like to enroll for a Social Work Degree for the 2011 academic year.  Students who are currently holders of a National Department of Social Development Scholarship do not have to apply.</p>

It is a non-profit organization with a staff of 350 and offices in over 10 countries across Asia and Africa and Headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Detail:</strong><br />
If you have recently completed your PhD in economics or sanitation but have sound understanding of both, then this could be just the assignment for you. IWMI seeks the right person to analyze problems relating to human waste, as used in agriculture, then form policy recommendations to enhance livelihoods in the rural/urban interface.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><span id="more-5121"></span>You will:<br />
</strong>• Provide economic and institutional analysis for projects that explore:<br />
o Sustainability indicators of low-cost wastewater treatment options across Africa<br />
o Agricultural reuse-oriented approaches into sanitation sector to recover nutrients and water from waste streams whilst improving<br />
environmental sanitation in Ghana<br />
o Role of small and micro-enterprises that specialize in waste reuse in Ghana and Uganda<br />
o How to enhance success of private ventures in wastewater collection and reuse<br />
• Collect and analyze field data on the economics of reuse from sanitation facilities<br />
• Examine economic &amp; institutional aspects of existing waste reuse models to determine viability &amp; develop further options<br />
• Study national agricultural and sanitation policies examining relevant economic, organizational, institutional, and<br />
financial issues to inform policymakers – through the development and application of economic decision tools/models for recovery of nutrients, organic matter and water from waste streams<br />
• Liaise with public officials on the awareness and implementation of public policies<br />
• Contribute ideas about linking agriculture and sanitation to enhance food security and business opportunities in West Africa through the reuse of waste resources, emphasizing cost recovery along the sanitation chain<br />
• Prepare scientific reports and articles for peer-reviewed journals</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>You must possess:</strong><br />
• A recent PhD in agricultural or natural resources or environmental economics or environmental or civil engineering and<br />
• A good understanding of agriculture and microeconomics</p>

• Sanitation challenges in developing countries: solid waste, fecal sludge and wastewater management (with on-site sanitation systems)<br />
• Technical feasibility &amp; social/economic opportunities/trade-offs in managing/re-using options for wastewater/fecal sludge<br />
• Computer-based, business process modeling tools for scenario building<br />
• Economic and institutional analysis across public and private sectors in sanitation sector or agricultural interface (demonstrated in<br />

Applicants for the Scholarship Programme will be required to:<br />
1. Submit a letter of application to the address given below. The letter must provide a summary of the applicant’s career plans and intended role in the development of South Africa and the continent of Africa.<br />
2. Submit a detailed budget plan for the proposed year of study, including all anticipated income and expenditure. This should be accompanied by a Pro-Forma Invoice from the University’s Fees Office.<br />
3. Attach curriculum vitae of no longer than TWO A4 pages.<br />

Provide proof that he/she has been accepted for fulltime study at the University of Cape Town Attach certified copies of all academic transcripts Provide proof of acceptance for study by the University of Cape Town and the relevant academic department. Evidence of such acceptance must be attached to the Application Package.<br />
5. Have secured a Supervisor. Evidence of the Supervisor’s commitment to supervise the applicant must be attached to the application package.<br />
6. Provide letters of reference from TWO ACADEMICS who have taught and/or supervised the applicant. These references should be attached to the application in sealed envelopes or sent directly to the address given below before the closing date.<br />
7. Submit an approved research proposal summary or abstract for the PhD degree (this document must be no longer than 3 A4 pages)</p>

5. Doctoral and 2nd year Masters’ students will be required to publish at least one paper during the course of the degree.<br />
6. Plan and organise a seminar related to her/his field of study and to be held in the Postgraduate Centre of the University of Cape Town.<br />
7. Provide a full report on the seminar.<br />
8. Provide the required bi-annual reports reflecting academic progress.<br />
9. Provide regular progress reports, a letter of acknowledgement to the donors, updated biographical and contact details for submission to the A W Mellon Foundation</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Tenure:</strong><br />
The tenure of the award will be for 1 year, renewable for a maximum of TWO further years in respect of doctoral students; and 1 year renewable for a maximum of ONE further year in respect of masters applicants. All renewals will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds. Successful candidates are expected to complete their degrees within this time frame.</p>
