Yale China Association Is Organizing China Family Foundation Health Fellowship 2011

About Yale-China:
Founded in 1901, the Yale-China Association is a private, nonprofit organization with more than a century of experience contributing to the development of education in and about China and to the furtherance of understanding and knowledge between Chinese and American people. Yale-China’s work is characterized by sustained, long-term relationships designed to build Chinese institutional capacity. Current programs include the fields of public health and nursing, legal education, English language instruction, American Studies, and cultural exchange for Chinese and American students. Publications include a regular newsletter, biennial report, and the annual Yale-China Health Journal.

Detail:
Made possible by a generous grant from the Chia Family Foundation, the Chia Family Health Fellowship Program seeks to improve the general health and health education of the people of Hunan and Yunnan through public outreach programs and by promoting the role of Chinese women in the health professions. The Fellowship gives special emphasis to health projects that are concerned with the prevention and management of infectious and chronic diseases in the communities, and that focus on health issues faced by the vulnerable or overlooked populations in Hunan and Yunnan.
Four fellowships will be awarded for 2011, two for candidates from Hunan and two for candidates from Yunnan. Each fellowship has two components: a semester at Yale University followed by project implementation in Changsha or Kunming. In the fall, each Fellow will have the opportunity to study and conduct research for one semester at Yale under the guidance of Yale faculty before returning to China to complete the project. At the conclusion of the semester at Yale, each Fellow will submit an interim report to Yale-China and her faculty mentor summarizing her work at Yale and submit an application to the Yale University Institutional Review Board for the proposed project activities in China.
Upon returning to China, Fellows will complete any field research necessary and conduct the implementation phase of their projects by sharing their research findings and problem-solving strategies with colleagues and carrying out educational outreach programs.

Program Priorities:
The fellowship gives special emphasis to health projects that are concerned with the prevention and management of infectious and chronic diseases in the communities, and that focus on health issues faced by the vulnerable or overlooked populations in Hunan and Yunnan. Proposed projects will be judged upon their academic merits and topic, as well as applicants’ likelihood to continue to work in the priority area, as listed above, beyond the completion of the Fellowship.

Eligibility:
In accordance with the desires of the donor, only women working in the fields of public health and nursing in Hunan or Yunnan are eligible to apply for the program. Proposed projects should be focused on infectious and chronic disease prevention, management, and self-care in the community. In addition, special emphasis will be given to projects that address health problems faced by the disadvantaged or overlooked populations.

Selection:
Fellowship candidates will be reviewed and selected in October 2010 by a committee composed of representatives of the Yale-China Association and the Xiangya School of Medicine or the Kunming Medical University. Following a review of proposals submitted by the candidates, the selection committee will invite selected candidates for interviews at Xiangya or KMU in late October, 2010. The recipients of the fellowships will be announced in December 2010 or January 2011.
Selection will be based on the following criteria:
1.The candidate’s academic and professional strength and preparedness for the Fellowship Program.
2.The candidate’s professional motivation, training, and experience.
3.Overall assessment of the proposed project according to the following:
a.Quality of the research plan
b.Feasibility of the research/project plan
c.Relevance of the research/project plan to program priorities as stated above
4.The availability of an appropriate Yale faculty mentor.
5.The likelihood that the proposed work will continue upon return, including support from superiors.
6.The candidate’s potential to influence health practice and policy in Hunan or Yunnan.
7.The candidate’s commitment to community service and potential to continue to work in the same priority areas as outlined by the program.
8.The candidate’s English ability. (Candidates are expected to be able to understand English academic lectures, read academic journals, and converse easily about their work.)

How To Apply:
Application forms and instructions are available at the International Cooperation Offices of the Xiangya School of Medicine and Kunming Medical University (see below for contacts for Xiangya and KMU) and online at www.yalechina.org. The selection of 2011 fellowship recipients will be made in December 2010 or January 2011, which will allow new Fellows ample time to prepare for their studies at Yale the following fall, and to make arrangements with their superiors for completing their projects when they return to China.

» Download Application Form:
Each applicant should submit two copies of the application, one to Xiangya (Yunnan applicants) or KMU (Yunnan applicants), and the other to Yale-China (via email) by Thursday, October 15th, 2010. Please send your applications to the following addresses or contact the following offices if you have further questions.

Scholarship Description:
The programme is jointly facilitated by NWO and NSFC. A call for proposals will be published annually, calling for Sino-Dutch research proposals in thematic areas. The call will feature a different thematic priority every year. The thematic priorities will be selected jointly by NWO and NSFC, and further developed in a Sino-Dutch expert workshop prior to opening the call for proposals. This Call for Proposals pertains solely to the Plant Developmental Biology call and the granting process that both take place in 2011.

Who can apply:
Eligible research teams are composed of Dutch and Chinese researchers, with active involvement in the project of a senior Principal Investigator on both the Chinese and the Dutch side.
For Dutch scientists the NWO eligibility criteria are applied, i.e. the Dutch principal investigator should be affiliated to:
a Dutch university; or
a Dutch non-profit institution for scientific research qualified to submit research proposals to NWO.
To match the conditions imposed by NSFC on Chinese scientists, any Dutch scientist may be involved in one application/project only.
For Chinese scientists, please refer to the Chinese call for this program on NSFC’s website for the eligibility criteria of the Chinese applicants

 Procedure:
Selection of the proposals is performed according to a joint Sino-Dutch assessment and selection procedure.
1.After the deadline of the call, the technical admissibility of the proposals is checked. Eligibility criteria are checked in the Netherlands and in China.
2.The quality of the proposals will be assessed by (international) referees, according to the criteria specified in § 4.2. Each proposal is sent to 3-4 scientific experts, who will review the proposal.
3.The anonymous written reviews are sent to the Dutch applicants. The applicants are given the opportunity to write, preferably with input from both the Dutch and the Chinese partners, a single reply to the referees’ comments. This reply should not exceed three pages.
4.The assessment committee comprises independent scientific experts from China and the Netherlands. The assessment committee convenes once to moderate, rank and recommend proposals for funding on the basis of the criteria specified in § 4.2. The ranking of the assessment committee is sent as an advice to NSFC and NWO.
5.NSFC and NWO jointly decide on the projects to be funded.

About NRF:
The NRF was established through the National Research Foundation Act (Act No 23 of 1998), following a system-wide review conducted for the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (DACST). The new entity incorporated the functions of the research funding agencies that were previously servicing various sections of the research community, namely the former Centre for Science Development (CSD) of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the former Foundation for Research Development (FRD) that included several National Research Facilities.

Scholarship Description:
Formal diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Africa and the People’s Republic of China were established in January 1998. The following year marked the signing of the Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of South Africa, under which the Joint Committee (JC), composed of representatives from both sides, was put in place to translate the Agreement into cooperative activities. In 2001, the relations were given impetus through the creation of a Bi-national Commission, which is currently championing bilateral relations in seven sectoral committees including science and technology. The past decade witnessed a very satisfactory pace of development of relations between the two countries in all key areas of their economies.
