Project description: A post-doctoral researcher in mathematical physics or mathematics is searched for a 1 year position in the EPSRC project: “Classical Realizability and Quantum Representability: Truncated moment problems in Statistical Physics and Quantum Chemistry” in the research group led by Dr. T. Kuna.
To describe a complex system consisting of numerous components, in stead of the full state of the system, it is often sufficient to control few characteristics like moments, namely correlation functions and reduced density matrices. This circle of problem is naturally linked to the so-called closure problem for hierarchical equations and density functional theory. The aim of the project is to clarify the intrinsic properties of such characteristics associated to discrete objects like particles. The research will be an interplay of established approaches in science and related problem in pure mathematics. Techniques of classical moment problems are applied to uncover how the point like nature of the underlying system is encoded in the moments, this is known under the keywords realizability and $n$-representability. The first appeared in the context of heterogeneous materials and the second in the context of quantum chemistry and structure calculations. For further questions and enquiries please do not hesitate to contact me.

How To Apply: To apply, send a CV and a short description of your research to Mathieu LEWIN: Mathieu.Lewin@math.cnrs.fr
