International Summer School in Solar Technology Applications for Rural Development 2011 – Germany

Scholarship Description:Solar technologies are extremely promising with ever-increasing output efficiency and the capability to be used in almost any location. Decreasing availability of fossil fuels quickens the need for solar technology, which is driving current developments. Solar systems are also relatively affordable and applicable to both homes and villages. Many projects capitalizing on solar power have already been implemented in developing countries, and serve as encouraging results for many more to come.
Considering the importance of solar technologies the Centre for Renewable Energy at the University of Freiburg in collaboration with the DAAD is organizing a week long course on solar technologies for rural electrification and enhancement of living standards in the developing countries. Solar Shift is intended for professionals from developing countries who have previously studied or worked in Germany. Applicants should be working in the renewable energy sector; which may include Engineering, Financing, Policy, etc. The programme will consist of lectures, workshops, group work and discussions, excursions, and social and networking activities.

Scholarship Application Deadline:1st of April 2011

PhD Scholarships in Business, Economics and Social Sciences, University of Mannheim – Germany

Scholarship Description: The objective of the doctoral programs at the graduate school to provide top-class research training. The standardized structure of the doctoral programs at each of the centers of the GESS makes it possible for students and faculty to compare, interact, and collaborate across the three centers. Furthermore, it accounts for the fact that often top research in one field is inspired by developments in neighboring ones. The figure below provides an overview of the time-structure of the research training at the graduate school. The funding by the German Science Foundation (DFG), first-year students can be fully financed by grants. Students who have successfully passed the first year of doctoral studies, will be funded either through grants or research or teaching assistantships. The decision about the form of continuation finance is made after the first year of doctoral studies. Doctoral grants are in the range of € 1.100 (not subject to income taxation).

Admission:
Admission to the doctoral programs of the GESS takes place on an annual basis for the programs starting in September of the respective year. Applications handed in before February 15 will be treated as early applications and decided on before the offical deadline which is April 15. Applications from candidates who are not accepted in the early application round will be reviewed again with all other applications after April 15. In general, the prerequisite for admission to a doctoral center is a master’s degree in the respective field or equivalent. Applicants from neighboring fields can be admitted if their background is judged to be sufficient.

Doctoral Positions at Max Planck Institute for Software Systems – Germany

About MPI-SWS:
Computer systems permeate every aspect of human endeavor. In addition to the most visible examples of desktop computing and the Internet, sophisticated computer systems are hidden inside every modern vehicle and appliance, they support the operation of our financial, medical, educational and administrative institutions, they facilitate science, manufacturing, transportation and trade, and they enable new forms of entertainment and social exchange. However, our ability to transform computing innovations into practical use is limited by our ability to design and implement increasingly powerful, complex software systems while ensuring their safety and dependability.

Graduate Studies:
The institute provides a stimulating, competitive, yet collaborative environment for research and graduate education. Qualified candidates can pursue doctoral degrees under the supervision of MPI-SWS Faculty. Graduate students work as members of one or more of the institute’s research groups, which perform internationally leading, highly visible research in their respective fields of specialization. Graduate students receive individual training and mentoring from MPI-SWS faculty, preparing them for leadership in world-class academic or industrial research.

Application and Admission:
Qualified candidates who wish to pursue a doctoral degree in a research area covered by MPI-SWS faculty may apply using the application form. The review of applications for Fall 2011 will begin on January 15, 2011. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to submit applications by that date; however, we will continue to accept applications throughout the year for exceptionally strong candidates. Please expect a delay of up to three months when applying outside the normal schedule. Admitted applicants will have an opportunity to visit the institute and interact with faculty and students before making their decision.
Admission to the graduate program is highly competitive. A four-year Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree from a top-tier, research-oriented institution of higher education is required. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record (at or near the top of their class), excellent scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general and computer science subject tests, proficiency in spoken and written English, and strong letters of recommendation from their academic advisors.MPI-SWS maintains an open, international and diverse work environment and seeks applications from outstanding students regardless of their national origin or citizenship. The working language is English; knowledge of the German language is not required for successful studies at the institute. Those who would like to learn German, however, can attend German language classes. The language classes are free-of-charge and are offered at varying levels of proficiency. The institute is committed to increasing the representation of women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities in Computer Science.

Administrivia:
Admitted students are advised by MPI-SWS faculty and conduct their research at the institute. Academically, the graduate program is administered in cooperation with a degree-granting university, normally Saarland University or the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. Graduation at another university is also possible through special arrangements with MPI-SWS faculty; however, students are expected to be in residence and perform their research at the MPI-SWS.All admitted students receive a scholarship to cover fees, living expenses and health insurance. Additional financial support is provided for students with a dependent spouse or children.Successful applicants from non-EU countries are sponsored for a student visa. Students may seek gainful employment and apply for permanent residency in Germany after their studies. MPI graduates are highly sought after by academia and industry worldwide.
