Detail:
Following two centuries of internationally renowned scholarly activity on the Maynooth campus the National University of Ireland, Maynooth was established under the 1997 Universities Act as an autonomous member of the federal structure known as the National University of Ireland. With approximately 8,400 registered students, NUI Maynooth has 26 academic Departments which are organized into three Faculties: Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy; Science andEngineering, and Social Sciences.Building on a tradition of scholarship and excellence in all aspects of its Teaching and Learning, and research activities, within the liberal arts and sciences tradition NUI Maynooth is committed to being a first class research-led centre of learning and academic discovery. It is located on a pleasant university campus in Ireland’s only university town 20km west of Dublin, and has recently undergone a major phase of expansion in research, teaching and service facilities. The spacious campus is laid out in its own extensive grounds in rural surroundings, and is divided between an older complex of fine nineteenth century buildings and a modern complex of teaching, research, accommodation, and support facilities.

History:
In 1795 Grattan’s Parliament passed an Act which created an academy “for the better education of persons professing the popish or Roman Catholic religion”.The new College, under the influence of the Duke of Leinster was to be founded in Maynooth and in time it became not only Ireland’s national seminary, but also the largest seminary in the world. In 1896 St Patrick’s College Maynooth attained the status of a Pontifical University for its courses in Theology, Philosophy and Canon Law. Following the foundation of The National University of Ireland, Maynooth became a Recognised College of that federal structure in 1910. In 1966 St Patrick’s College opened its doors to lay students and its population grew rapidly over the next three decades. In 1997 the Faculties of Arts, Science, Celtic Studies and Philosophy were united in a newly established constituent university of the National University of Ireland.NUI Maynooth is oday a rapidly developing non-denominational university centre of some 8,800 students. Its traditional core strengths have been augmented by new developments in Finance, Computer Science, Software Engineering and Electronic Engineering. It sees itself as an institution which links a rich history with a distinct mission in a rapidly developing modern Ireland.

PHD Studentships in Physiology at University College Dublin Ireland

Location: School of Medicine and Medical Science, UCD

Description:
Applications are invited for a PhD position in Physiology, School of Medicine and Medical Science, University College Dublin, Ireland. The student will join a vibrant group of researchers interested in chronic hypoxia and cardiorespiratory control. Our research group has demonstrated that chronic hypoxia causes respiratory muscle re-modelling in rodents with evidence of ‘adaptive’ and ‘maladaptive’ changes that are dependent on pattern, duration and severity of exposure, and the timing of hypoxic exposure across the age spectrum.

By combining methodological approaches ranging from molecular, through functional experiments in isolated tissue, to studies in behaving animals we are examining the impact of hypoxia on the respiratory system. This project, funded by the Health Research Board (Ireland), will explore the mechanisms underlying respiratory muscle dysfunction following chronic intermittent hypoxia.

Position Value: Stipend is 16,000 euro per annum plus full fees for EU nationals.

Expected duration of project: 1/10/2009 – 30/9/2012

Qualifications: Candidates should have at least an upper second-class honours degree in physiology or a cognate discipline in the biomedical sciences or equivalent.

Further Details: For further information contact: Dr Ken O’Halloran

Email address: ken.ohalloran(AT)ucd.ie

Closing Date: 31 July 2009
