Introduction:
The European University Institute (EUI) was set up in 1972 by the six founding Member States of the European Communities to provide advanced academic training to doctoral researchers and to promote research at the highest level. It opened its doors to the first researchers in 1976.
It carries out research in a European perspective in Economics, Law, History and Civilization, and the Political and Social Sciences.
Its full-time teaching staff, fellows and researchers are recruited from all over Europe and beyond. The EUI welcomes researchers who wish to study for the Institute’s doctorate (Ph.D. four years), or for the one-year Masters programme (LL.M.) in Law.
The EUI offers fellowships for postdoctoral applicants (Jean Monnet and Max Weber fellowships) as well as for distinguished scholars (Fernand Braudel fellowships).
As a host institution, the EUI welcomes Marie Curie Fellows and European Research Council grantees.

Scholarship Description: The doctoral programme prepares researchers for developing and defending a thesis. Every year, 160 research grants are awarded by the EU Member States and other European national authorities to successful candidates. The 1st year of the programme is devoted to acquiring a solid background for the doctoral work and to the design of the proposed research. The second and third years are dedicated to research, field work, data collection and writing of the thesis under close supervision. The fourth year is dedicated to finishing and defending the thesis, and part of the year may be used for professional or university traineeship, and teaching opportunities. A Ph.D. from the European University Institute is an internationally recognised qualification.

Detail:
The research activities will take place mainly within the NBT Group (Neuroengineering and Bio-Nanotechnology Group) as part of an ample multidisciplinary EU project on composite phenotypic triggers for bone and cartilage repair. Brief research periods at project partners research laboratories may be required.

Criteria:
The main research focus will be on the development and application of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) based methods for micro- and nano-mechanical characterization of native and engineered tissues and the assessment of neotissue integration, as well as on relating micro- and nanomechanical response to tissue composition and structure.
Examples of the group activities in the field can be found in “Early detection of aging cartilage and osteoarthritis in mice and patient samples using atomic force microscopy.” M.Stolz et al. Nature Nanotechnology Vol.4, 186-192 (2009) and in “Use of hydrodynamic forces to engineer cartilaginous tissues resembling the non-uniform structure and function of meniscus.” A.Marsano et al. Biomaterials. 27: 5927-5934 (2006).

Studentships will be awarded by open competition.
Requirements: Candidates should possess a Master Degree/University Diploma in Physics, Engineering, Biology or related fields. Attitude towards experimental work and instrument/software development is essential. Previous experience with AFM operation is a plus.

Application deadline: Thursday, September 23, 2010
