Introduction:
Flexible electronics represents a new class of emerging technology for the applications of large-area electronic products which can be attached over arbitrarily curved surfaces. Graphene, a one–atom thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal array, is the thinnest material ever studied. It is not only one of the hottest research topics in the world today, but has also received the highest recognition with the Nobel Prize in Physics 2010. It is among the most promising candidate materials for a variety of flexible electronic applications due to its unique electrical, mechanical and optical properties. The main purpose of the current position is to explore fundamentals and component technology based on graphene towards flexible electronic devices

Scholarship Description: The successful candidate should have a master of science in physics, chemistry, material science or equivalent. Strong collaboration spirit and good communication skills in oral and written English are required. The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20%

Eligibility:

Scholarship Description: Aquatic microorganisms hold central roles in most biogeochemical cycles. In this PhD project we will study the roles played by bacteria and archaea in the transformation and metabolic use of quantitatively significant carbon compounds in lakes and oceans. For this purpose, we will use a combination of controlled experiments and advanced cultivation-independent methods for microscopic and sequence-based characterization of the ecology and metabolic features of aquatic microorganisms. The ability of different bacteria and archaea to use methane, chitin, proteins and other quantitatively important carbon compounds will be studied at the level of single cells.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a University degree in biology, molecular biotechnology, bioinformatics or related discipline. Basic knowledge in microbiology and proficiency in oral and written communication in English is expected. Documented experience in bioinformatics and/or laboratory work will strengthen your application. Personal motivation and interest in the subject will also be used to select candidates for the position.

How to apply: Applications should contain a brief personal letter (max 2 pages) where the applicant give a brief account of research interests, educational background and any other information relevant for the position. The application should also contain a curriculum vitae (CV), copies of relevant certificates/grades to demonstrate eligibility and the names and contact information of at least two personal references. Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the application deadline (March 25, 2011).

PhD Studentship in Food Technology – Sweden

Scholarship Description: Emulsifying substances act by contributing to the disruption of the droplets and by protecting the formed droplets from coalescing. To enable these actions the emulsifiers need to adsorb rapidly at the surfaces and form a protective layer. Starch nanocrystals of specific sizes and hydrophobicity will be designed and used as colloidal particles to generate and stabilise Pickering type emulsions. The aim is then to understand their function depending on size, shape, and hydrophobicity in relationship to the interface they are adsorbing to. The use of starch nanocrystals as emulsion stabilisers is novel, and finds practical use not only in pharmaceutical and food applications, but also in the paper industry. Furthermore, the almost irreversible adsorption of colloidal particles creates very stable emulsions in contrast to surfactant molecules.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements:
The general eligibility requirement for doctoral studies is a university degree of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level. Furthermore you need a valid university degree at advanced level (MSc) within a relevant study program. To be qualifield for researach education (PhD education) in Food Technology the candidate needs to have a Master of Science in Engineering, specialisation in Biotechnology, Chemical engineering or Ecological enigneering or Master of Science in Chemistry or other discipline relevant to the field of the degree project or other equivalent degree

Basis of Assessment:
Employment as a doctoral student can only be granted if you have been accepted to the PhD study program. The selection to this program is based on an assessment of your ability to perform well in and benefit from the program. This is also one of the basic criteria for employment.
The assessment considers the following aspects in particular:
1.Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within this area, such as course work. This can be documented by appended documents and possible interview.
2. Estimated ability to independent work and ability to formulate and solve scientific questions. This ability can be established, for example, based on a master thesis or in a discussion of scientific problems during a possible interview.
3. Skills in written and oral communication in English.
4. Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.
Practical laboratory experience is required. Courses in physical, colloidal, and/or surface chemistry is an advantage as is also numeracy skills (i.e. mathematical modelling, MATLAB/programming, analysis).

The department was founded to promote a closer collaboration between clinical and pre-clinical research and part of the activity is integrated with the clinics of genetics and pathology-cytology at the University Hospital, Uppsala. Rudbeck Laboratory has access to state-of-the-art technologies, with core facilities for cell analysis, confocal microscopy, DNA-sequencing and genotyping.
We look for you who want to study for a PhD degree in the field of molecular medicine. The main project will be to investigate if measurements of protein activity status provide advantages for cancer diagnostics (leukemia and circulating tumour cells). Protein activity is determined as protein interactions and post-translational modifications, using flow cytometry and microscopy. The work will also consist of development of new methods in molecular biology.
