Coventry University Full-time Scholarships (2009 Entry)

Notes for Guidance
To be retained by the applicant
Coventry University has made a wide range of Scholarships available to UK and EU full-time students. Applications will be judged against the particular selection criteria set out for each individual scholarship scheme. The full eligibility criteria for each scholarship scheme can be found on the University’s Scholarship and Bursary webpage (www.coventry.ac.uk/cu/d/189). Scholarships awards are subject to annual renewal conditions.

The closing dates for all full-time scholarships are shown below. We recommend that applications are submitted as early as possible, particularly for performance related scholarships, as there are a limited number of these available.

Before you can apply you must:
• have made a firm (CF, UF) commitment to the University during the UCAS admissions phase
• be a new entrant student to the University for the 2009-2010 academic year or have progressed from a Foundation course at Coventry University
• be starting on the first year of a full-time undergraduate (including HND) HEFCE funded course that charges the full £3,225 University tuition fee
• meet the normal course entry requirements

Academic based Scholarships – closing date 31 October 2009. (Unlimited number available)

1) Academic Scholarship (£2,000 per academic year)
The Academic Scholarship recognises academic excellence and is available to students who achieve a high
academic standard. To be considered students must have achieved or expect to achieve 320 UCAS tariff
points from one of the following sources:
• three full A-levels (e.g. ABB). General Studies and VCE Advanced Award can be included in the three full A-levels (VCE Double Advanced award counts as two full A-Levels); OR
• an International Baccalaureate with at least 31 points; OR
• equivalent vocational qualifications such as BTEC National Diploma or an Access course.
For a full list of qualifications that will be accepted for this scholarship please see the above webpage. The University expects to receive A-Level results electronically so you do not need to produce copies. However, we reserve the right to contact students if for any reason results need to be confirmed by other means. Copies of any alternative qualifications offered will need to be provided once your results are available.

2) STEM Scholarship (value of Tuition Fee each academic year)
This scholarship is for those taking certain courses in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These courses are clearly identified in the 2009 prospectus by the atomic symbol. To be considered students must have achieved or expect to achieve 320 UCAS tariff points from the same sources as the Academic Scholarship shown above. Please note that students are advised to continue to apply for full Tuition Fee Loan support from the Student Loans Company until the award of this scholarship is confirmed.

Performance based Scholarships – closing date 30 June 2009. (Numbers are limited)

3) Sports Scholarship (between £1,000 – £4,000 in a mixture of cash and services per academic year) Available to students who can demonstrate excellence in a sporting activity prior to starting at University. To be considered:
- Students should have competed at regional or national level in their chosen sport
- Students must be participating in a sport recognised by the Central Council for Physical Recreation (see http://www.ccpr.org.uk and search for “List of members”).
Evidence of achievements should be provided to support your application.

4) Enterprise Scholarship (£2,000 per academic year)
Creativity, enterprise and innovation lie at the heart of Coventry University and to encourage our students to build-on these skills we are offering Enterprise Scholarships to full-time undergraduate students who demonstrate a flair for business ideas whether this is developing a business of their own or being innovative and creative within larger organisations. To be considered:
- Students must submit a report (between 500 – 1000 words) on their enterprising activities as outlined in the eligibility criteria included on our website.

5) Creative or Performing Arts Scholarship (£2,000 per academic year)
Available to students who can demonstrate a high level of originality and/or artistic ability. This can be in a wide range of areas from creativity in IT, such as computer games or animation, through to film production, music composition or performance, exhibited art or creative design, or public performance in dance or drama.
To be eligible:
- Students should demonstrate excellence in areas of creative endeavour or performing arts prior to and during their time at university.
- Students may have produced pieces of work which have been publicly exhibited or performed in public venues or won national competitions for their work.

Please note the following:
• Students can apply for a number of scholarships but may only receive a maximum of one full-time scholarship
• Students who decline their place at Coventry University or select Coventry University as their insurance choice are not eligible for a scholarship
• Full-time students on courses whose fees are funded by external bodies, for example by the National Health Service Business Authority or the National Health Service can only be considered for a Creative & Performing Arts Scholarship or Sports Scholarship
• Students will not be eligible for any full-time scholarship if they are a student on Foundation Art and Design, Foundation Degree or undergraduate foundation year (year zero) course; postgraduate or overseas student; or are a student studying on a franchise, hybrid or validated Coventry University course at another institution
• Students studying a second degree are not eligible to apply for these scholarships
• Applications for the performance-related scholarships will be assessed by a Scholarship Panel
• All decisions made by Coventry University will be final
• All information regarding scholarships for 2009 may be subject to change.
• Students have to meet strict renewal conditions in order to continue receiving a Scholarship after Year 1.
