Awards: AHRC maintenance grant and Bristol tuition fees of £3,440 are also covered.

Eligibility:

Scottish Overseas Research Student Awards Scheme (SORSAS) 2010 UK

Introduction:
The SORSAS was set up to attract high quality international studies to the UK to undertake research.

The scheme is open to overseas students undertaking a research degree in any area of study. The awards provide funding to pay the difference between the overseas rate of tuition fees and the home/EU rate of tuition fees. The awards DO NOT cover the home/EU fee element, maintenance or travel expenses.

New awards are granted annually, on a competitive basis, to overseas postgraduate research students of outstanding academic ability and research potential.

Eligibility:
Overseas (non-EU) students who have been accepted either conditionally or unconditionally for admission as a full-time, postgraduate research student for the 2010/11 academic year. Applicants must apply for admission either before or in conjunction with their SORSAS application. Applicants who have not applied for a research degree at the University by the scholarship closing date, will not be considered for SORSAS.

OR

Overseas (non-EU) students who are currently registered as a full-time postgraduate research student at the time of applying for an SORSAS award (not in their final year of supervised study).

All applicants must be assessed as overseas for tuition fee purposes and be liable for the overseas rate of fees.

Who cannot apply:
Students from EU member states are not eligible for an award because they are not required to pay tuition fees at the full international rate. The following countries are currently members of the EU: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Students undertaking part-time, undergraduate or taught postgraduate courses are not eligible. Students undertaking a 1+3 degree i.e. a Master’s degree followed by a 3-year full-time PhD are not eligible to apply for their first year (the Master’s year). Students are only eligible to apply for an award for their PhD studies.

Students who have previously held an SORSAS award and who have received SORSAS funding in any previous year or years are not eligible to apply for a second (new) award. SORSAS awards are automatically renewed subject to the award holder making satisfactory progress with their studies.

Students who currently hold an SORSAS award are not required to re-apply to continue their existing award.

Applications from students who fall into one of the following categories will not be accepted:

those entering their third year of postgraduate research study in 2009/10

those who already have a PhD or equivalent, or who already have an established research career

those who are undertaking a Master’s degree followed by a 3-year PhD.

Necessary Qualifications:
The level of competition for SORSAS awards is very high and only those students who, by the time they take up their award, hold an undergraduate degree with either First Class or very good Upper Second Class honours (or the equivalent), or a very good Master’s degree, will be considered.

Length of Award:
Awards are offered for one year in the first instance. Subject to the satisfactory progress of the award holder, awards may be renewed for a second or third year according to the normal remaining length of the research programme being undertaken. No award will be made for more than 3 years of full-time study.

Application Procedure:

Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarships 2010 for students in any subject in UK

Introduction:
At the University of Exeter we believe that a University education should be about more than just an academic qualification. These prestigious awards are designed for students in any subject area who combine high levels of academic achievement with excellence in the kind of extra-curricular activities we believe make an important contribution to the life of the University.

Who may Apply:
These are available from October 2010 for students applying for any subject, who, in addition to academic excellence – the achievement or prediction of at least three A grades at A level (excluding General Studies) or equivalent accredited examinations – demonstrate achievement and potential in, and continued commitment to, at least one of the following areas:
volunteering
leadership
entrepreneurship
exceptional talent in music, the arts or sporting activities/participation of benefit to the community which are outside their field of study (i.e. a Drama student would not be eligible for a performing arts-based award or an Exercise and Sport Sciences student for a sports-based award)

Scholarship Details:
Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarships are renewed annually on the basis of (a) evidence (e.g. a report and references) of continued contribution and achievement in the relevant areas; and (b) continued excellent academic performance (the normal expectation would be performance at a level likely to lead to the award of a First Class Honours degree). There will be an expectation that nominated scholars register for the Exeter Award in their first year of study and, where appropriate, progress in due course to the Exeter Leaders Award. Enrolment and participation in these schemes will constitute part of the scholar’s profile as a positive, pro-active role-model within the student community.

How to Apply:

Applications will be considered from all students who meet the academic requirements of the award, regardless of their choice of degree subject and who demonstrate achievement and potential in at least one of the extra-curricular fields outlined above.

If you are deemed eligible, we will write to you with further details of how to submit your application once we have made you an offer of a place to study at Exeter. Your application should be supported by a referee who can confirm the evidence of exceptional academic and personal achievement given in your application.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications is the 26th February 2010.

If you do not receive e-mail notification that your submitted application has been received by the Admissions Office by the prescribed deadline above, please contact the Scholarship Administrator (details below) to verify safe receipt.

You will be notified of the outcome of your application before you have to advise UCAS of your firm and insurance choices. The scholarships will be awarded to those candidates who choose Exeter as their First choice following the initial notification of an award nomination. If you are made a conditional offer we will confirm the award in August upon receipt of your examination results.

Application Deadline: 26th February 2010.
