FLAGSHIP INTERNATIONAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS – PHD IN AUSTRALIA UNIVERSITY

Flagship postgraduate scholarships

National Research Flagships offer Postgraduate Scholarships to high quality students to work on a project relevant to Flagship research.

The Flagship Collaboration Fund

Collaboration is a key principle of the Flagship initiative. The Australian Government has provided A$114 million over seven years for the Flagship Collaboration Fund to facilitate the involvement of the wider Australian research community in addressing the critical national challenges targeted by the Flagships.

The Flagship Collaboration Fund offers many opportunities for collaborative work or study including Postgraduate Scholarships.

Flagship Postgraduate Scholarships

The Flagships offer full and top-up Flagship Postgraduate Scholarships to high quality students who are enrolled in a PhD at an Australian university, and who will be working on a project which is directly relevant to a Flagship.

Top-up scholarships will be the norm. Valued at A$7 000 per annum, they are available to PhD students who have gained (or expect to gain) an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent scholarship.

In some circumstances full scholarships will be available. These offer a stipend of the equivalent of an APA plus CSIRO’s top-up amount of A$7 000 per annum for three years.

Flagship Postgraduate Scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in a PhD at an Australian university.

International students are eligible to apply but must be able to provide evidence of admission to an Australian university.

Read the Flagship postgraduate scholarship guidelines. http://www.csiro.au/resources/pf4z.html

Priority research areas

Each flagship has nominated priority research areas for 2008-09 against which applications will be accepted. Applicants should clearly state which areas their proposed PhD project is relevant to. If a student’s research is not directly aligned with one of the nominated areas, they must clearly state how it is relevant to the Flagship in question.

Closing dates

Applications for scholarships due to commence in 2009 are now open. Applications close at 11.59 on Sunday, 30 November 2008.

Selection criteria

Postgraduate scholarship applications are assessed on the criteria set out in the guidelines, specifically:

  • the quality and relevance of the proposed project
  • alignment with the work of the Flagship
  • quality and prospects of student and track record: course marks, conference papers, presentations, publications (student must have or expect to gain first class Honours or equivalent).

Funding agreements

CSIRO uses a simple standard agreement for student scholarships.
