SCHOLARSHIP TO WASEDA UNIVERSITY

ONE-YEAR STUDY PROGRAM 2010/11

OBJECTIVE

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JCCI) Singapore Foundation, in cooperation with Waseda University in Japan, set up a one-year scholarship program for university undergraduates to study culture, history, society, politics, economics, geography, arts, literature and so forth of Japan and other parts of Asia. The scholarship program was established in 1995 to commemorate Singapore’s 30th Year of National Independence and the 5th Anniversary of JCCI Singapore Foundation.

The Foundation hopes to provide young Singaporeans an opportunity to study in Japan through this program. Also, it wishes to promote further exchanges and cooperation between Singapore and Japan. The successful candidate is thus expected to play the role of a diplomat with the task of strengthening
the bilateral relations.

NATURE OF SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is a 10 months study program at the International College of Waseda University. The Foundation provides full sponsorship that includes two-way air ticket, tuition fee, daily expenses, and accommodation and transportation allowances, up to a maximum of S$50,000. There is no bond
attached to the scholarship, except that the scholar is expected to assist in the Chamber’s activities when required.

THE INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF WASEDA UNIVERSITY

Waseda University is a private institution of higher learning located in Tokyo, Japan. It has a long tradition of being a pioneer in international activities in education and research. The International College, previously known as the international division, was established in 1963 for foreign students to provide an opportunity for effective short-term study of Japan and Asia. Each year approximately 120 international students are admitted to the program. Nationalities of those international students range from the USA, Asian countries, Europe and others. The program is basically conducted in English unless otherwise stated, and Japanese Language courses at different levels are available.

SCHOLARSHIP PERIOD

From September 2010 to July 2011.

ACCOMMODATION

The successful candidate will have to stay in the Dormitory (Out of campus) arranged by JCCI.

CONDITIONS & CRITERIA

• All applicants must be Singapore citizens, below the age of 28 (as at 1st January 2010).
• Applicant must be a university undergraduate or graduate from an Arts and Social Sciences,
Business or Law background.
• Applicants with some knowledge of basic Japanese language will be preferred.
• Applicant must have genuine interest in Japan.
• He/ She must be physically healthy.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please read the following instructions carefully.

(1) The official application form can be downloaded from the JCCI web site (http://www.jcci.org.sg). Hard copies are also available from the JCCI secretariat, NUS, SMU and NTU. Please type or write legibly.

(2) The following documents should be attached together with the application form.

• Certified True copies of official transcripts, school results, testimonials and other educational certificates
• Certified True copy of Birth certificate
• Original letters of recommendation from two of the dean, department head, academic advisor, an instructor or person who knows the applicant well
• A typewritten essay explaining academic objectives for studying abroad (two to three pages)
• One non-returnable passport size photograph (Attached to application form)

(3) Submit Application form, together with the relevant documents to the following:

(4) All Applications must be submitted by the closing date: 11 September 2009

OTHERS

• Short-listed candidates must present themselves for interviews.
• The successful candidate must be able to leave for Japan first week of September and is expected
to attend all lectures faithfully until the end of the course.
• The scholar is to submit a brief report on his/her stay in Japan at the end of the course.
