PHD STUDENTSHIP POSITION 2009 – BIOMOLECULAR / BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES – UCD IRELAND
School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Science – University College Dublin
PhD Studentship: Neuronal Responses to HypoxiaScience Foundation Ireland
Project Details: The goal of this project is to examine the role of prolyl hydroxylases (PHD) and TNF?in acute non-transcriptional neuronal responses to hypoxia. The project will utilizestate of the art electrophysiology to focus on the effect of the PHD inhibitor DMOG onsynaptic responses in the hippocampus.
The successful applicant will alsoinvestigate the acute signaling mechanisms involved in physiological hypoxia, adenosine receptor activation and DMOG application on brain slices (synaptictransmission). Finally the project will also assess the signaling mechanisms involvedin the effect of TNF? during hypoxia.
Principal role:
- Electrophysiological recordings from isolated rat hippocampal slices
- Po2 measurements in tissue
- Manipulation of hypoxic pathways such as PHD and HIF1
- Supporting and training undergraduate and other doctoral students
Requirements:
- A degree in a biomedical science discipline (2.1 or above) such asneuroscience, physiology, pharmacology, or equivalent.
- A team worker
- Good interpersonal skillsDesirable experience:
