Detail:
The AW Mellon Foundation and the University of Cape Town has established a Scholarship Programme to support excellent South African students and students from other countries in Africa who intend to contribute to the development of the continent by leveraging their educational advantage. Although applicants from other countries in Africa will be considered, South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be given preference. Allocation of awards will be based on academic merit and financial need. Only the following fields of study will be considered. Social Justice, Historical Studies, Political Theory and Criminology, Music, with preference for Ethnomusicology, Environmental and Geographical Studies, Anthropology, Film & Media, Gender Studies, Philosophy, Psychology, African Languages, Democratic Governance, Constitutionalisation of Private Law, Constitutional Law, Marine & Environmental Law, Intellectual Property Law, Organisational Psychology ,Economics, Actuarial Science, Demography Determined individuals who intend to contribute to the development of and who intend to address the problems facing South Africa and the continent of Africa are invited to apply for these Scholarships.

Eligibility:
South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be given preference. Allocation of awards will be based on academic merit and financial need.Applicants from other countries in Africa will be considered.Only the following fields of study will be considered. Application Procedure:
Applications are invited from suitable candidates (see PURPOSE above) who intend to commence with full-time masters or doctoral studies at the University of Cape Town in 2011. Only applicants who will register for the first year of study and whose intended studies fall into the areas of study shown above will be considered.
Applicants for the Scholarship Programme will be required to:
1. Submit a letter of application to the address given below. The letter must provide a summary of the applicant’s career plans and intended role in the development of South Africa and the continent of Africa.
2. Submit a detailed budget plan for the proposed year of study, including all anticipated income and expenditure. This should be accompanied by a Pro-Forma Invoice from the University’s Fees Office.
3. Attach curriculum vitae of no longer than TWO A4 pages.
4. Provide proof that he/she has been accepted for fulltime study at the University of Cape Town Attach certified copies of all academic transcripts Provide proof of acceptance for study by the University of Cape Town and the relevant academic department. Evidence of such acceptance must be attached to the Application Package.
5. Have secured a Supervisor. Evidence of the Supervisor’s commitment to supervise the applicant must be attached to the application package.
6. Provide letters of reference from TWO ACADEMICS who have taught and/or supervised the applicant. These references should be attached to the application in sealed envelopes or sent directly to the address given below before the closing date.
7. Submit an approved research proposal summary or abstract for the PhD degree (this document must be no longer than 3 A4 pages)

Values: The values of the AW Mellon Scholarships are as follows:
Doctoral: R160,000 per annum (renewable as shown in Tenure above).
The Scholarship is broken down, as follows:
Tuition and Living Expenses – R120,000
International/Conference Travel – R30,000
Seminar Allowance – R5000
Contribution to the Costs of Research– *R5000
*NOTE 1: Contribution to the Costs of Research is NOT payable to the student. If awarded (in terms of the applicable conditions), it will be paid to the research fund of the successful candidate’s Supervisor as a contribution to the student’s running or travel costs. NOTE 2: Conditions apply to all of the above allowances.
Masters: R100,000 per annum (renewable as shown in Tenure above). The Scholarship is broken down as follows:
Tuition and living expenses – R80,000
International/Conference Travel – R10,000
Seminar Allowance – R5000
Contribution to the Costs of Research– *R5000
*NOTE 1: Contribution to the Costs of research is NOT payable to the student. (If awarded in terms of the applicable conditions), it will be paid to the research fund of the successful candidate’s Supervisor as a contribution to the student’s running or travel costs. NOTE 2: Conditions apply to all of the above allowances.

Conditions: Successful candidates will be required to:
1. Register for full-time study at the University of Cape Town.
2. Comply with the University’s policies, rules and procedures, including conditions of payment of award, as outlined on the UCT Claim Form.
3. Enter into and adhere to a bi-lateral agreement with her/his supervisor (this is known as the UCT Memorandum of Understanding), outlining the work-plan and time-frame for completion of the degree.
4. Complete the degree in the specified 3 year tenure for doctoral students, and 2 year tenure for masters’ students.
5. Doctoral and 2nd year Masters’ students will be required to publish at least one paper during the course of the degree.
6. Plan and organise a seminar related to her/his field of study and to be held in the Postgraduate Centre of the University of Cape Town.
7. Provide a full report on the seminar.
8. Provide the required bi-annual reports reflecting academic progress.
9. Provide regular progress reports, a letter of acknowledgement to the donors, updated biographical and contact details for submission to the A W Mellon Foundation

Tenure:
The tenure of the award will be for 1 year, renewable for a maximum of TWO further years in respect of doctoral students; and 1 year renewable for a maximum of ONE further year in respect of masters applicants. All renewals will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds. Successful candidates are expected to complete their degrees within this time frame.
