			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Engineering PhD Special Scholarship Program 2009 in Kochi, Southern Japan</strong><br />
Special Scholarship Program (SSP) was established in 2003 in order to support the advanced research of the university by enlisting the help of highly capable international students. Every year in April and October, the university enrolls selected foreign doctoral students under specific research projects. The students pursue the doctoral course in English while at the same time assisting their host professor as a research assistant (RA). Through this program KUT wishes to expand and deepen international ties with academic and educational institutions all over the world. <span id="more-2876"></span></p>
<p>Application Guideline for Special Scholarship Program (SSP)</p>
<p><strong>1.Program of study</strong></p>

*The term will be extended for increments of one year up to a total of three years, unless the university terminates the scholarship for any of the reasons stated below in the paragraph 12, Termination of Scholarship<br />
<strong>5. Obligations</strong></p>
<p>(1) Scholarship recipient must work as a research assistant under the specific research project.<br />
*However, the total paid working time per week, including research assistant work, should not exceed 28 hours.<br />
(2) Scholarship recipient must report his/her study and research achievements to the dean of the graduate school of engineering at the end of each semester. The submitted reports will be evaluated.<br />
<strong>6. Benefits</strong></p>
<p>(1) Receive up to 1,200, 000 yen per year for working as a research assistant.<br />
(2) Exemption from 300,000 yen enrollment fee and 535,800 yen (per year) tuition fee.<br />
(3) Receive 200,000 yen for travel and initial living costs (given only to applicants who are living outside Japan at the time of application)<br />
<strong>7. Eligibility</strong></p>
<p>?Applicants are required to meet all of the following conditions</p>
<p>(1) To have or to be expected to acquire a master’s degree before enrollment.<br />
(2) To have intention, adequate knowledge and research skill to work as a research assistant under the one of research projects listed here<br />
(3) To have an excellent academic record<br />
(4) To have a high English proficiency<br />
(5) To be 35 years old or under at the time of enrollment<br />
(6) To have other than Japanese nationality<br />

<strong>10. Admission decision</strong></p>
<p>The applicant will be notified of the admission decision by express mail within 3 months after the deadline of the application.<br />
<strong>11. Special notice</strong></p>
<p>(1) If you are still working towards your master’s degree, a verified original master’s degree certificate in English from your university will be required before your enrollment can be complete. If you are not able to produce such a document, you will not be enrolled.<br />
(2) If SSP scholarship recipient is selected as a recipient of another institution’s scholarship, his/her monthly pay for working as a research assistant will be adjusted.<br />
<strong>12. Termination of scholarship</strong><br />
Scholarships will be terminated in the following cases</p>
<p>(1) If the scholarship recipient takes time off from school<br />
(2) If a report submitted in accordance with term 5 (2) is considered inadequate for a scholarship recipient.<br />
(3) If the university considers the scholarship recipient’s behavior inappropriate for a scholarship recipient.<br />

<p><strong>Introduction</strong></p>
<p>The AUN/SEED-Net Project with support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provides scholarships for prospective applicants from AUN-SEED/Net Member Institutions to pursue doctoral degrees in engineering at one of the following Japanese Supporting Universities: Hokkaido University, Keio University, Kyoto University, Kyushu University, Tokai University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Toyohashi University of Technology, University of Tokyo, Shibaura Institute of Technology, and Waseda University.<span id="more-1985"></span></p>
<p>The fields of study that can be supported by the AUN/SEED-Net are as follows: Civil Engineering (CE), Chemical Engineering (ChE), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Environmental Engineering (EnvE), Geological Engineering (GeoE), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Manufacturing Engineering (ManuE), Materials Engineering (MatE), and Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering (ME/AE).</p>
<p>Under the above 9 fundamental engineering fields, applicants, if interested, may also propose any research topic(s) related to the new five (5) interdisciplinary areas (Biotechnology, Disaster Mitigation, Global Environment, Natural Resources/Materials, and New/Renewable Energy). Although studying outside ASEAN countries, students under the Doctoral Degree Program in Japan are encouraged to participate in AUN/SEED-Net’s network activities (e.g. AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference, Collaborative Research activities, etc.) so as to create, maintain, and deepen the linkage with Member Institutions (student’s sending institution and/or student’s hosting institution when pursued master’s degree).</p>
<p><strong>Objectives</strong><br />
1. To increase the number of high quality doctoral degree holders in engineering at Member Institutions to contribute to a sustainable industrial development of ASEAN countries.</p>
<p>2. To strengthen human networking of teaching and research staff among Member Institutions and Japanese Supporting Universities.</p>
<p><strong>Duration of Scholarships</strong><br />
The duration of the scholarship is normally not more than three years. Target number of scholarships<br />
Eighteen (18) scholarships for each Japanese fiscal year.</p>

Barbato Michele (primary advisor) and Marc Levitan (co-advisor) A Graduate Research Assistant position is open for a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, at the Louisiana State University and A&amp;M College, under supervision of Dr. Michele Barbato (primary advisor) and Dr. Marc Levitan (co-advisor).<span id="more-1015"></span></p>
<p>The research project, funded through the Economic Development Assistantship Program by the Louisiana Board of Regents and NSF EPSCoR, will focus on the integral development of a comprehensive Performance-Based Hurricane Engineering methodology for wind-borne debris hazard mitigation through quantitative analysis and design of structural and non-structural components of building envelopes in hurricane-prone geographical regions. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. A Bachelor and Master Degree in Civil Engineering or related field (preferably with a minor in Structural Engineering) are also necessary to apply for the position.</p>
<p><strong>Selection Criteria:</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;The recipient of this assistantship will be selected among the qualified applicants based on:</p>
<p>&nbsp;• strong motivation and interest toward research;</p>
<p>• solid mathematical background (e.g., familiarity with ordinary and partial differential equations, complex analysis, numerical methods, probability and statistics);</p>
<p>&nbsp;• excellent preparation in structural analysis, continuum mechanics and finite element method;</p>
<p>• familiarity with Load and Resistance Factor Design and Probabilistic Methods applied to Structural Engineering problems;</p>
<p>&nbsp;• knowledge of linear and non-linear finite element programs such as SAP2000, Abaqus, Ansys, and OpenSees. • programming skills in Matlab and C or C++;</p>
<p>• previous knowledge and experience in Wind Engineering and Performance-Based Engineering.</p>

Thus the issue is not simply a matter of equality, ensuring that all careers are open to men and women alike, but also one of ensuring that there are sufficient numbers of outstanding researchers in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) to support a knowledge-based economy.<span id="more-982"></span>&nbsp;Women represent the greatest untapped source of potential talent. In particular, there is a clear need to increase the participation of women in engineering in Ireland and the most direct way to build the talent pool in Ireland is through an enhanced focus on undergraduate engineers.</p>
<p><strong>The Scholarship SFI Scholars will receive:</strong></p>
<p>-An annual award of €2,000 administered through their host institution<br />
-A DELL notebook computer<br />
-The assistance and support of an active researcher as a mentor throughout their undergraduate career<br />
-At least one funded summer research-internship in an academic research laboratory or an industry R&amp;D laboratory in Ireland .</p>

<p><strong>Annual Scholarship for 2009-2010</strong></p>
<p>The American Council of Engineering Companies of Wyoming (ACEC of Wyoming) is offering three scholarship awards totaling $8,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year. One $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who expects to graduate in December of 2009, May 2010, or August 2010. One $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who will be a Junior at the beginning of the Fall 2009 semester. One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who will be a Junior or Senior at the beginning of the Fall 2009 semester.<span id="more-592"></span></p>
<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY:</strong> Students seeking the awards must be United States citizens or permanent residents,enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Wyoming, and have a grade point average of at least 2.5.</p>
<p><strong>SUBMITTAL:</strong> The application must be addressed to the UW ACEC Scholarship Committee, College of Engineering and Applied Science, P.O. Box 3295, Laramie, Wyoming 82071-3295. The application must provide the following:<br />
1. A letter containing the following:<br />
a. A paragraph describing your major (civil, electrical, etc.), your present G.P.A. and your class (Senior or Junior) for the year you are seeking the scholarship.<br />
b. A paragraph (less than 100 words) describing your career plans and aspirations.<br />
c. A paragraph (less than 200 words) discussing your views on the private practice of engineering and how it may relate to your future career plans.<br />
2. A resume which should include:<br />
a. A listing of the student engineering societies in which you are a member and a description of your involvement in each.<br />
b. A listing of your extra-curricular activities (campus, community, church, etc.).<br />
c. A summary of your work history including part-time and full-time employment during the academic years and summers.<br />
3. One letter of reference from an individual having knowledge of your participation in extracurricular activities and/or work history.</p>
<p><strong>SELECTION CRITERIA:</strong> Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:<br />
• Writing skills demonstrated in the letter of application and resume. (20 points)<br />
• Content of the paragraph describing career plans and aspirations. (20 points)<br />
• Content of the paragraph relating to the practice of engineering. (20 points)<br />
• The applicant’s work history. Current or previous employment with an engineering or land</p>
<p>surveying firm is not required for consideration for this scholarship. (20 points)</p>

<p>Applications for 2009-2010 will be accepted December 3, 2008 through March 2, 2009</p>
<p>Complete one application to be considered for one of the available FeMET, StEEL, or AISI/AIST Foundation Premier Scholarships</p>
<p>The American Iron and Steel Institute and the Association for Iron and Steel Technology Foundation have joined together to create the AISI/AIST Premier Scholarship to increase the number of students studying engineering in North America, and to encourage such students to pursue careers in the iron and steel industry upon graduation.<span id="more-488"></span><strong>Scholarship Amount:</strong><br />
One (1) scholarship of US$10,000 will be awarded to an engineering student expecting to graduate in 2011.&nbsp; The scholarship will include a paid internship at a North American steel company during the summer of 2010 and a second scholarship of US$10,000 in the student’s last year, based on satisfactory academic and internship performance.</p>
<p><strong>Eligibility Requirements:</strong>Applicant must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate engineering program at an accredited North American university in 2009-2010,<br />
Applicant must have an expected graduation date in 2011,<br />
Applicant should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,<br />
Applicant should have a demonstrated interest in the iron and steel industry,<br />
Applicant must be eligible for employment at a steel company in the country he/she is in school during the Summer of 2010.&nbsp; Satisfying the employment criteria in the appropriate country is the responsibility of the applicant.&nbsp; Applicants unable to accept the summer internship will not be considered.<br />
Applicant must commit to a paid summer internship (2010) at a North American steel company to be eligible for this scholarship.<br />
Applicant must receive a “satisfactory” internship performance review from the steel company, and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA, to be eligible for year two of this scholarship.</p>
<p><strong>Required Documents:</strong><br />
A completed application form.<br />
A current résumé with work experience and any extracurricular activities, noting any leadership positions.<br />
An essay, not to exceed two pages in length, of your professional goals explaining why you are interested in a career in the steel industry, and how your skills could be applied to enhance the industry.<br />
Letters of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor familiar with your work (minimum of two) and from an employer (optional, but recommended if you have relevant industry work experience).<br />
A current academic transcript or other official documentation of academic standing and performance.<br />
A list of the source and amount of any other grants and scholarships being applied towards your tuition in 2009-2010.</p>

<p style="text-align: left">Every year, Engineers Canada invites CEMF to hold its Annual Awards Luncheon during their annual general meeting. This event is held in a different location across Canada. Our scholarship winners are invited to attend with accommodation, travel and meals covered by our sponsors and donors. The Luncheon gives us a chance to present framed certificates of accomplishment to our winners and celebrate their achievement.</p>

<p>The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,500 per year for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. The Goldwater Foundation seeks students in mathematics or the sciences, display intellectual curiosity and intensity; and possess potential for significant future contributions in their chosen field. Sophomores awarded the scholarship receive two years of support; juniors receive one year of support. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.60 to be considered for the Campus Selection procedure.<span id="more-405"></span></p>

<h2>Eligibility</h2>
<p>To be considered for nomination as a Goldwater Scholar, a student must:</p>
<ol>
<li>Be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education during the 2008-2009 academic year. &#8220;Sophomore&#8221; is defined as a student who plans two more years of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2008. Sophomore nominees can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support. &#8220;Junior&#8221; is defined as a student who plans one more year of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2008. Junior nominees can expect to receive a maximum of one year of support.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Have a college grade-point average of at least &#8220;B&#8221; (or the equivalent) and be in the upper fourth of his or her class.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Be a United States citizen, a resident alien, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a United States national. Nominations from resident aliens must include a letter of the nominee&#8217;s intent to obtain U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the Alien Registration Card.</li>
</ol>
<h2>Nomindation Procedures:</h2>
<p>All candidates for scholarships are nominated by their college or university. The Foundation will not solicit or accept applications directly from candidates but will advise applicants as to the appropriate procedures.</p>
<p>The Foundation invites eligible accredited U.S. institutions (or branches of those institutions) to nominate students for the 2009 competition. Two-year institutions may nominate up to two current sophomores. Four-year institutions may nominate up to four current sophomores or juniors.</p>
<p>If an institution chooses to nominate more than one student, these nominees may reside in the same state or district or they may be from different states or districts.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>The faculty representative:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Publicizes the Goldwater Scholarship Program on campus.</li>
<li>Solicits faculty recommendations of outstanding students who demonstrate commitment to pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.</li>
<li>Establishes the process to select the best qualified candidates to be nominated.</li>
<li>Helps nominees prepare for the competition.</li>
<li>Ensures that the institution&#8217;s nominations are complete and submitted online by the stated deadline.</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;<strong>Important Dates:</strong><br />
September 2008: Goldwater Scholarship online application and materials available from the Foundation&#8217;s website.<br />
September 2008: Goldwater Faculty Representatives emailed with instructions for submitting nominations for the 2009 competition.<br />
January 30, 2009 5:00 p.m. CT: Deadline for online submission of nominee application(s) for the 2009 competition.<br />
February 2, 2009: Mail receipt deadline for all supporting documents.<br />
February 2009: Scholarship Review Committee meets to recommend finalists to the Foundation Board of Trustees.<br />
Mid March 2009: The 2009 Goldwater Scholars and Honorable Mentions approved by the Board of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.<br />
Late March 2009: All nominees and their faculty representatives are notified of their final status in the competition.</p>
