Philips Healthcare Research Grant ($5000): Early Recognition of Deteriorating Changes in the Patient’s Clinical Condition

The focal area for the research is Joint Commission’s (JCAHO) Goal #16: To improve recognition and response to changes in a patient’s condition. It is critical that nurses recognize early changes in the patient’s condition in order to appropriately notify the rapid response team (RRT) or similar emergency teams. This research is to be related to early recognition of changes in patients whose condition is deteriorating, prior to notification of the RRT.

Purpose
The purpose of the Philips Healthcare Grant is to support research that will improve nurses’ early recognition of changes in patients whose clinical condition is deteriorating.

Areas of inquiry may include some of the following:

* Assessment measures (scoring methods, traditional early warning systems (EWS), modified EWS, single versus combination thresholds)
* Involving family in patient observation
* New ways to use traditional vital signs
* New parameters for or measurement of critical symptoms (i.e. pain level, level of consciousness, etc)
* Documentation of crisis and transition to RRT or other healthcare providers
* Education

Scientific Merit
The proposal will be reviewed on its scientific merit which will include the following:

• The direct and/or indirect benefits of the research in terms of efficacy, process, and/or workflow in identifying patients at risk for a clinical crisis in adult care units.
• Ability of the principal investigator (and research team) to implement the proposed research
• Adequacy of the facilities and resources available to the principal investigator for the research project

One (1) $5,000 Research Grant

Deadline
Applications must be received in the AMSN Foundation Office by July 8, 2009. Submissions received after the application deadline will not be considered.

Eligibility
The principal investigator must be actively involved in some aspect of medical-surgical patient care, education, or research. If the PI is not presently a member, they must agree to join AMSN if they are funded. Preference is given to projects that involve nurses in the design and conduct of the research activity and that promote theoretically based medical-surgical nursing practice. AMSN member on research team preferred.
