WSJ NYU Fellowship
The Wall Street Journal Journalism in Asia Fellowship, funded by WSJ in association with New York University

It’s a program funded by The Wall Street Journal, in association with New York University, for one or two promising journalists from Asia to enroll in the three-semester masters program in business and economic reporting at the NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.

The intensive sixteen-month program, which has graduated a number of Journal and Dow Jones Newswires reporters in recent years, features a unique interdisciplinary curriculum of both journalism and MBA courses and a remarkably low 4:1 student-to-faculty ratio, providing both intellectual rigor as well as hands-on mentoring for a dozen hand-picked students.

Candidate submissions will be judged by a team of Journal editors working in conjunction with NYU professors.

Eligibility:
Full-time journalists currently working in Asia, with a minimum of two years’ experience at a print or electronic publication.
At least one of those years should have been at an English-language publication.
Candidates should also be fluent in an English and an Asian language, and possess a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree plus one year of graduate work.
Employees (including immediate family members and/or those living in the same household of each) of Dow Jones or NYU, or their affiliates and subsidiaries are not eligible.

Fellowship Details:
The Fellowship covers tuition expenses and fees for two of the three semesters of the program, as well as providing a stipend of US$22,000.
The Fellowship covers travel to New York as well as some incidental costs, such as textbooks.
Previous fellows have reported that this adequately covers living expenses and at least one trip home.

Apply: All candidates must submit the following:
A one-page resume, written in English, detailing work and educational experience.
Three to five published articles written in English.
The judges would prefer that at least two of the articles be longer enterprise features. In general, the articles should be chosen to demonstrate your reporting, writing and analytical skills. They need not be focused on business or financial topics, although such articles would be preferable.
A 200- 300-word memo describing an article you would like to pursue on a business topic of significance to a broader international readership.
The memo should lay out the thesis of the article, offer some supporting evidence for the thesis, detail how you would pursue the story, and explain why the topic is of relevance to a global audience.
An original 1,000-word essay written in English.
The 1,000-word essay must be written entirely by you without any assistance in composition or editing. It will be judged both as a piece of writing and as evidence of your aspirations, interests, abilities, and experience. It should be specific and detailed enough to communicate a concrete sense of your character and capability. You must write out and sign the following statement: I did not receive assistance of any kind in the composition and editing of this essay.
In the essay, tell us about yourself. What were your key inspirations in your life and as a journalist? How did you come to have an interest in business journalism, and what role do you see it playing as part of the media? What are your hopes and dreams as a journalist, whether or not you win this Fellowship? How will the NYU program help you accomplish your goals if you are selected? And what will you bring to the program? Tell us also about your interests outside of journalism. What are your broader goals in life?

Send your application packet to:
Cathy Panagoulias
Deputy Managing Editor
The Wall Street Journal
200 Liberty Street
New York, NY 10281
USA

Important Dates:All applications must be received by January 20, 2009.
Finalists will be selected by March 2009.
Winners will be announced by summer 2009.

You will be contacted by Dow Jones in case you are selected.

If the selected Fellow declines the fellowship or fails to accept it within 14 days of first attempted notification, whether notification is by e-mail, regular mail or telephone, or, if after reasonable attempts are made, notification is unsuccessful, the fellowship will be awarded to another finalist.

Mini Fellowships

In 2007, the Kaiser Media Fellowships Program launched a new program for reporting on global health issues. The program awards mini-fellowships to print, radio, television, and online journalists (including freelancers) to research and report on global health issues, with a particular focus on issues related to HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. The purpose is to encourage in-depth reporting on the health, social, economic, political and cultural implications of major public health issues and on the response to these challenges. Awards of up to $10,000 will be given to journalists to cover travel and research expenses relating to a specific project of their choice for publication, broadcast, or online posting.

Eligibility:
This program is for journalists working for English-language news organizations with target audiences in North America and/or Europe. For example, this would include an African journalist reporting for a British news organization; or the Delhi bureau chief of a Canadian newspaper. There is no age restriction.

Selection for the fellowships is highly competitive. Fellows are selected by an international committee of editors primarily on the basis of previous and potential work, on the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to reporting on health issues, and on the committee’s determination of which candidates would benefit most from this program.

Eligible Projects:
Given the focus of this program on global health issues, the scope of eligible topics is inherently very broad. Note that priority will be given to projects addressing some of the many implications of HIV/AIDS, TB, and/or malaria. Also bear in mind that reporting on global health issues can be very locally focused, and international travel is not a requirement or necessity for a project to be selected. For example, an applicant from Toronto could write about a local university medical team/church/NGO group’s work on malaria prevention in Africa. A U.S. journalist could compare HIV/AIDS prevention efforts among teens in their community with those in South Africa; or could track how effectively PEPFAR money is being dispersed.

To Apply:
There is no application form.

To be considered, mail the following materials to the executive director*:
A detailed letter describing your reasons for applying; your career goals; a short outline of the reporting you would want to complete; and what you would aim to accomplish as a result of the fellowship
A brief description of your news organization and its readership/audience
Budget outline (see more details below)
An estimated project timeframe
Curriculum vitae or resume
Where relevant, details of previous awards or fellowships
Examples of recent work (work samples will not be returned to applicants)

Print applicants: 5-8 clips. Original clips should be pasted or photocopied on to standard 8.5”x11” or 11”x17” paper (applicants may submit an original copy along with the mounted copy). If clips are reduced in size to fit the page, they should be legible. Special paper, margins, etc. are not necessary. Most importantly clips should be clean and clear, easy to photocopy and able to fit in a standard file folder.
For photographs, please submit regular prints and/or photocopies – no slides.
Television applicants: please send DVDs or VHS tapes in NTSC – not PAL – format.
Radio applicants: please send CDs or cassette tapes. Please label each piece with your name, program title, running time and date aired.
Internet applicants: please send your clips in hard copy format, printed from your website, in addition to providing website links.
One or more letters of support from other journalists familiar with your work, including a letter from your current senior editor or news director supporting your application (freelance journalists should send a letter of support from an editor, producer or colleague familiar with your recent work). Letters can be emailed directly to Penny Duckham (pduckham(AT)kff.org) or included in your application file.
* All applications must be mailed in hard copy. An email version of your application can be sent in addition, but not as a substitute.

Applications must be mailed to the following address:
Penny Duckham
Executive Director
Kaiser Family Foundation
Kaiser Media Fellowships Program
2400 Sand Hill Road
Menlo Park, CA 94025
USA
Email: pduckham(AT)kff.org

If you have further questions about the fellowship or would like to clarify any of the application requirements, please send an email to mediafellows(AT)kff.org before you submit your application materials.

Budget Outline
Applicants should describe broadly which parts of their project would require funding from the fellowship. List the various categories associated with the cost of the project—such as travel (air, train, car), accommodation, meals, production, translation, editing, telephone, and/or project materials—and provide an estimated cost for each category. For example, travel to abc countries, states, or cities to interview abc projects or experts, at an estimated cost of approximately abc dollars (or other currencies); accommodations and meals in abc countries, states, or cities at an estimated cost of approximately abc dollars (or other currencies);

Where possible, the fellow’s news organization will be actively encouraged to supplement the fellowship award.

Note that the maximum amount for the award is US$10,000; projects requiring less money will receive special attention.

Note: Selections for the 2009 Mini Fellowships program will be announced in early January 2009. Please email mediafellows(AT)kff.org in the meantime with any questions.

Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program 2009

Each year 20 outstanding media professionals from the United States and Germany are awarded an opportunity to report from and travel in each other’s countries as part of The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program. The program offers 10 young print and broadcast journalists from each country the opportunity to share professional expertise with their colleagues across the Atlantic while working as “foreign correspondents” for their hometown news organizations.

The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program was established in 1988 in Germany by the Internationale Journalisten-Programme (formerly the Initiative Jugendpresse) and was originally designed for young German journalists. In 1990, the fellowship expanded to include American journalists, making it a true exchange program. Named in honor of the late former U.S. ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and former Federal Reserve Board chairman, the program fosters greater understanding of German-U.S. relations among future leaders of the news media. The program is administered jointly by the International Center for Journalists in Washington, D.C., and the Internationale Journalisten-Programme (IJP) in Konigstein, Germany.

The U.S. portion of The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program is funded exclusively by donations from individuals and private-sector corporations and foundations. A board of trustees including, among others, Henry Kissinger, Norman Pearlstine, Craig Kennedy and Howard A. Tyner, oversees fundraising and other program activities. Costs for the German participants are paid for by grants from German corporations, government agencies and international foundations.

One German and one American current or former fellow are selected each year for a journalism prize in the amount of €2,000 for the best published print or broadcast segment.

Report in Germany or the United States on this journalism exchange program

This nine-week program is conducted in two phases:

Phase I:
Orientation Session in Washington, D.C.
Before individual fellowships begin, U.S. and German participants are invited to a one-week orientation in Washington, D.C., during the last week of July. Fellows attend meetings with prominent media and government representatives, discuss professional issues and visit places of interest in the U.S. capital. In addition to giving fellows a thorough understanding of the Burns Fellowship Program, the orientation fosters a spirit of community among the participants.

Phase II:
Individual Fellowships in Germany and the United States
In August and September, fellows work as part-time staff members at host newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations. In addition to covering local news, fellows report on events for their employers back home, while learning more about their host country and its media. For broadcast journalists, the fellowship does not guarantee the availability of technical crews and equipment; fellows are encouraged to make private arrangements whenever possible. In most cases, participants also have the opportunity for work-related travel. Individuals may prolong their stay overseas.

Host news organizations are chosen by IJP with assistance in the United States from ICFJ. Host organizations are selected on the basis of compatibility with a fellow’s professional interests.

Eligibility
This competitive program is open to U.S. and German journalists between the age of 21-37, who are employed by a newspaper, news magazine, broadcast station or news agency, and to freelancers. Applicants must have demonstrated journalistic talent and a strong interest in U.S.-European affairs. German language proficiency is not required, but it is encouraged. The application deadline for American journalists is March 1.

Application Form: http://www.icfj.org/LinkClick.aspx?link=294&tabid=460

Participant Responsibilities:Each participant is required to sign the “Agreement to Program Conditions” indicating that he/she understands and will comply with the general conditions of the program. At the conclusion of the fellowship, each participant is required to prepare a summary report and provide recommendations for future programs. Excerpts of these reports are published in the program newsletter, which is sent to program alumni, sponsors and friends.

Program Expenses:
Each U.S. Fellow receives a $4,500 stipend to cover living expenses during the two-month fellowship in Germany. Participants also receive travel vouchers from Continental Airlines, and the program also pays living expenses during the orientation in Washington, D.C. In addition, American participants are eligible to apply for reimbursement up to $500 for the cost of German-language classes in advance of departure overseas.

The Fellowships are designed for self-motivated journalists who hope to improve their coverage of science, technology, medicine or the environment. We are part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The nine-month program is divided between individually-chosen activities and twice-weekly Knight seminars arranged by the director. A Fellow’s work usually includes courses audited at MIT and Harvard, attendance at departmental colloquia, field trips, lab visits, interviews, reading and writing. Each Fellow designs his or her own course of study in discussion with the director. Some Fellows audit three or four courses. Others choose to spend time in a lab.

Our twice-a-week seminars, laboratory visits and field trips bring Fellows up-to-date on current research and broaden their exposure to various fields of science. A number of seminars are devoted to the craft of science writing and issues involving interactions between science and society. Knight Fellows also gain automatic admission to our highly competitive week-long Boot Camps.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is the principal sponsor of the Fellowships.

Eligibility:
We award 10 to 12 fellowships each year. To be eligible for a Knight Fellowship, you must have at least three years of full-time experience covering science, technology, medicine or the environment. We also consider journalists who wish to gain expertise in these fields and who have at least five years of full-time experience. This experience must be in the years immediately prior to applying.

Applicants must demonstrate a high level of journalistic excellence and accomplishment, as well as a long-term commitment to their craft. Applicants may be reporters, writers, editors, producers, illustrators or photographers. They may work for newspapers, magazines, television, radio or the web. We also consider full-time freelance journalists. There are no educational prerequisites. Professionals working in public information, public relations, the trade press, government or academia are not eligible.

Journalists from all countries compete on an equal basis. Our $60,000 stipend is awarded to all Fellows, regardless of nationality. If you are not a U.S. citizen and are chosen for a fellowship, your fellowship is contingent upon receiving a J-1 visa from the U.S. State Department.

Unless self-employed, applicants must obtain a leave of absence from their employer. Knight Fellowships require full-time residence in the Boston/Cambridge area for the academic year—August through May. Fellows are required to participate in our twice-weekly seminars, field trips and Boot Camps. Fellows must refrain from professional work during their fellowship year.

Selection Process:
Applicants are selected each spring by a panel of leading journalists and MIT faculty. All application materials must be received by March 2. Finalists are chosen in mid-April. U.S. finalists are brought to Cambridge for interviews in late April. International finalists are interviewed by telephone. Winners are announced by early May.

The Southern African-German Journalists‘ Programme is a multiyear effort to shape an integrated understanding of the other country and region and to foster relations between Africa and Germany. The bursary is intended to enable young journalists to gain valuable insights into the political, economical, cultural as well as the social fabric of the host country.

Application 2009All journalists from Southern Africa (SADC Member States) between the age of 25 and 35 who regularly work for a media organisation can apply. But they must be either German or Southern Africans.
