Undergraduate Scholarships 2010-2011 for Engineering, Natural Science, and Mathematics, USA

The Foundation is supported by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Fund, which has been established in the Treasury of the United States. Funding for awards and administrative expenses derives from interest on the Trust Fund, invested in U.S. securities.

The purpose of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, as stated in the enabling legislation, is to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. A more realistic statement of the purpose, in today’s terms, is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of academic study and research.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields.

In awarding scholarships, the Foundation Board of Trustees will consider the nominee’s field of study and career objectives and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.

Nominees for Goldwater Scholarships must include in their online application a statement of interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees.

Eligibility

1. Be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education during the 2009–2010 academic year. “Sophomore” is defined as a student who plans two more years of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2010.

2. Have a college grade-point average of at least “B” (or the equivalent) and be in the upper fourth of his or her class.

3. Be a United States citizen, a permanent resident, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a United States national. Nominations from permanent residents must include a letter of the nominee’s intent to obtain U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as the Alien Registration Card).

Deadline
Institution’s designated Goldwater Faculty Representative must electronically submit their completed online application(s) for the Goldwater Scholarship by January 29, 2010, 5:00 p.m. central time.

Faculty representatives may establish an internal deadline prior to January 29 for all nominees to have their application completed. Nominations not electronically submitted by 5:00 p.m. central time on January 29, 2010, will not be considered. Institutions must mail all supporting documents to the Iowa City address by the receipt deadline of February 1, 2010. Customer support will only be available from 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. central time, Monday–Friday.

Introduction

Under the University of Cambridge 800th Anniversary Scholarship Programme, the University has introduced a new scholarship scheme for applicants for undergraduate admission from Pakistan for 2010 entry onwards. The details are as follows:

Eligibility

The scholarships are for school-leavers from Pakistan who meet the usual examination qualifications for admission to Cambridge. Applicants for all courses except Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are eligible to apply.

The scholarships are not available if a student already has a degree and is therefore applying to Cambridge as an affiliated applicant.

The scholarships will cover the cost of tuition fees and College fees together with a grant towards maintenance and travel costs for each year of the course. The maintenance element of the scholarship will take account of the students’ financial circumstances.

The scholarships are competitive and conditional on a College offer of a place to study at Cambridge, including meeting any immigration and English language requirements. Continuation of the scholarship from year to year will be conditional on satisfactory examination performance.

Application

All students who meet the conditions above and wish to be considered for an 800th Anniversary Scholarship should complete a scholarship application form and apply for a place at Cambridge in the usual way, submitting a UCAS application and a Cambridge Overseas Application Form (COAF) together with the scholarship application form by 20 September 2009. Applicants for the scholarships will be interviewed in Pakistan in October/November 2009.

Deadline
