UT, CANADA – PEDIATRIC IMAGING FELLOWSHIP 2010

Pediatric Imaging Fellowships 2012 in University of Toronto in Canada

About The University:
The University of Toronto was founded as King’s College in 1827 and has evolved into a large and complex institution. It now occupies three campuses: Scarborough and Erindale and the historic St. George campus. It has federated with three smaller universities which are on the St. George campus, and is affiliated with several colleges and institutes. There are ten fully affiliated teaching hospitals in metropolitan Toronto. Faculty conduct research in many places in Canada and around the world.

Detail:
There are presently six funded Clinical Pediatric Radiology Fellowship positions in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at The Hospital for Sick Children. Self-funded positions can also be arranged. Some clinical fellows in the department are funded either by international grants or by institutions in their home countries. Separate fellowship positions in Pediatric Interventional Radiology and Pediatric Neuroradiology are also available.  The clinical fellowship program provides training for those radiologists interested in pursuing a career in Pediatric Radiology and who have already completed four years’ training in a General Radiology residency training program. The Hospital for Sick Children has one of the largest and busiest pediatric radiology departments in the world, performing approximately 100,000 studies per year.  The fellowship is designed to be flexible enough to suit the needs of the individual fellow. Both one and two year programs are offered.

Fellows in the two year program rotate through the following areas during the first year:
1. plain films, including in-patient studies in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as outpatient and emergency room examinations
2. fluoroscopy in the GI/GU suite, including non-angiographic interventional studies such as biopsies and drainages
3. Ultrasound, including neurosonography
4. body CT +/- neuro CT
5. body MR
Second year rotations include:
1. neuroradiology, including CT, MR, myelography and neuroangiography
2. angiography and angiographic interventional work
3. cardiac imaging

Fellowships for those individuals entering specific subspecialty areas within Pediatric Radiology are also available (e.g., Neuroradiology, Cardiovascular Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, etc.). These are usually one year fellowships; however, length may vary depending on individual requirements and funding.

Fellows are given as much responsibility as they can handle and are expected to reach the level of junior staff colleagues well before they leave the Department. Fellows are placed on the night and weekend call schedules. As they become more familiar with the department, fellows are put in a supervisory role over residents who are performing in-house call.

Paid vacation is four weeks per fellow, per year. Funding is available for one conference (travel and accommodation) for each year of fellowship. If papers are presented at other meetings, additional funding may be available.

Research time is provided to all fellows. Most fellows prefer to have time available during the week for research activities rather than having single blocks of rotations for research, but this can be altered to suit individual needs. Fellows are supported in all academic activities and in the past this has led to numerous presentations at national and International Pediatric Imaging meetings as well as to the publication of many papers, chapters, and even books. Pediatric Imaging fellows are expected to produce at least two papers each year.

We make every effort to tailor the training to accommodate the needs of our fellows. It is most helpful, and in fact expected, that candidates will discuss their particular needs with us well in advance of beginning their fellowship training.

Deadline: Deadline for receipt of applications is Wednesday, September 1, 2010.
